[Addition: tiger12506 adds that he has succesfully performed this on two WRT54GS v7… At the time this is written (4-FEB-2008), the only 3rd party firmware that will work on a Linksys WRT54GS v7 router is the micro edition of DD-WRT. Although the micro edition has been stripped down to fit in the 2MB flash memory of the router, it does come with a lot more features than the factory installed firmware.

I have done this on a countless number of WRT54G v8s and just did it on a WRT54GS v7 and it worked just the same.
18 Des 2018 This method has also been used on WRT54Gv8 (not GS), and should work on the v7.0. My WRT54GSv7.2 has an EON EN29LB160AB-70TCP flash chip and for a Linksys WRT54G version 7? Currently v7.00.1 is installed. I'm forced to look for an official firmware upgrade since there is not enough RAM for either openwrt or dd-wrt. This version is plagued by various flaws and needed an upgrade, but some hardware differences make it incompatible with all other hardware versions.
